Recording Usable Product Dimensions
Outside dimensions, internal dimensions and packaged dimensions answer different questions. A good purchase record identifies which measurement is being used.
Practical Considerations
Use outside measurements for fixture planning, internal measurements for fit, and packaged measurements for transport and storage. Include units and explain whether handles, lids or projecting parts are counted.
Suggested Procedure
- Label each measurement as internal, external or packaged.
- Use the same units in a comparison.
- Record the narrowest opening where fit matters.
Illustrative Example
A document wallet can be wide enough externally but have an opening too narrow for the intended papers. Record both the body dimensions and the usable opening.
Points to Check
Descriptions such as large, compact or universal do not replace measurements. Ask for clarification where a listing does not identify the basis of its dimensions.
