Writing Clear Shelf Tickets

Shelf tickets should answer the questions needed to identify the product and understand the price.

Practical Considerations

Use a consistent item name, saleable quantity and relevant size. Add useful contents information where a set or refill could be confused with another offer. Keep product claims tied to the supplier's information.

Suggested Procedure

  1. Identify the exact item or variant.
  2. State what the displayed price buys.
  3. Include the size or pack count that distinguishes it.

Illustrative Example

For measuring cups, a ticket saying four-cup set is clearer than four pieces when the retailer means four separate measuring cups in one package.

Points to Check

Check tickets when substitutions or packaging changes arrive. An old ticket can be misleading even if the price remains correct.
